Classical Greek is essentially the Attic Greek dialect spoken and written by the Athenians of the fifth and fourth centuries BC. A very large portion of the Ancient Greek texts that we possess today was written in this dialect. Alexander the Great (356-323 BC) was taught Attic Greek, and with the spread of his domain through his conquests, Attic Greek became the koine dialect – the common Greek world dialect. The Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics offers first-year Classical Greek.
