Students wishing or required to take English as a second language (ESL) courses must take the English Language Proficiency Assessment (ELPA) test before enrolling. Native users of English are not eligible to enrol in ESL courses except under special circumstances (e.g. English as a second dialect) and with the permission of the director of the ESL program. Advanced students at the 3000 level normally take a minimum of three ESL credits and a maximum of 12 ESL credits. ESL in the English major: No more than six ESL credits, to be taken at the 3000 level, may be counted towards a major in English. These ESL credits may be counted as part of the 3000-4000 level requirement in the bachelor of arts degree program but not in the Honours BA.
English as a second language is offered by the Faculties of Glendon and Liberal Arts and Professional Studies.
