Classical Greek is the standard Greek dialect spoken and written by the Athenians of the fifth and fourth centuries BC. Most Ancient Greek texts that we possess today were written in this dialect. As a result of the conquests of Alexander the Great, Classical Greek spread throughout the Mediterranean, and it became the koine, or common, Greek of the Roman Empire and the Christian Church.

The Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics offers first-year Classical Greek. Upper-level courses in Classical Greek and courses in literature, ancient history and culture are offered by the Program in Classical Studies.
