The best preparation for teaching history is a BA degree or equivalent Honours degree in history. Courses can be chosen in consultation with a Faculty of Education adviser and/or the subject course director.

Candidates are encouraged to include courses reflecting the diverse nature of history and society. It is highly recommended to include courses involving themes such as race, gender, ethnicity and class, and also courses reflecting the histories of non-Western nations.

Intermediate/Senior

Candidates must complete 36 credits as follows: six credits must be in Canadian history but an additional six credits is strongly recommended. 12 credits must be from two of the following areas of history: developing world, European, ancient world or American history. 12 credits of the 36 must at the 3000- or 4000-year level. 24 credits in the teaching subject area must be completed prior to enrolling in ED/HIST 3051 6.00.

As a first teaching subject, you must complete 24 credits of the above credit courses prior to enrolling in Semester 1 and 2 ED/HIST 4000 3.00 and ED/HIST 4001 3.00.

As second teaching subject, you must complete six credits in Canadian History and 12 credits must be from two of the following areas of history: developing word, European, ancient world of American history. Six credits of the 18 must be at the 3000 or 4000 year level prior to enrolling in Semester 3 ED/HIST 3000.

Junior/intermediate

As your teaching subject, you must complete 24 credits as follows: six credits must be in Canadian history but an additional six credits is strongly recommended. 12 credits must be from two of the following areas of history: developing world, European, ancient world or American history. Six credits of the 24 credits must be at the 3000 or 4000 year level.
