Honours Majors

Students must complete the requirements of the Specialized Honours BA degree or the Specialized Honours BFA degree.

Specialized Honours BFA Program (Studio)

At least 66 credits in visual arts, including:

36 credits of in practicum courses, including:

  • FA/VISA 1010 6.00 taken in first year;
  • 24 credits at the 2000 or 3000 level, including a minimum of 9 credits at the 2000 level and a minimum of 6 credits at the 3000 level
  • FA/VISA 4090 6.00

30 credits in studies courses, including:

A maximum of 18 credits may be taken in the major each year; of these, only 12 credits may be practicum.

At least 24 of the 66 credits in the Major must be at the 3000 or 4000 level.

Students must also complete:

12 elective credits chosen from the other departments in AMPD

6 credits from the FA/1900 3.00 series of courses, outside the Visual Art & Art History major

18 credits of General Education courses: 6 credits from each of Humanities, Social Science and Natural Science (or approved substitutes)

12 credits non-AMPD electives

24 free elective credits

6 free elective credits – may include major FA/VISA or FA/ARTH

6 free elective credits – excluding major FA/VISA or FA/ARTH

Specialized Honours BA Program (Art History)

Students must complete at least 54 credits in visual arts, including a minimum of 42 credits of studies courses, including:

  • at least 15 credits at 1000/2000 level (including FA/ARTH 1130 6.00);
  • at least nine credits at the 3000 level;
  • at least 12 credits at the 4000 level;
  • no more than 12 credits may be taken in practicum, including FA/VISA 1005 3.00 and FA/VISA 1006 3.00;
  • a maximum of 18 credits may be taken in the major each year; of these, only six credits may be practicum;

At least 24 of the 54 credits in the major must be at 3000 or 4000 level.

Students must also complete:

12 elective credits chosen from the other departments in AMPD

6 credits from the FA/1900 3.00 series of courses, outside the Visual Art & Art History major

18 credits of General Education courses: 6 credits from each of Humanities, Social Science and Natural Science (or approved substitutes)

12 credits non-AMPD electives

12 free elective credits – may include major FA/VISA or FA/ARTH

12 free elective credits – excluding major FA/VISA or FA/ARTH

Honours Minor (Studio)

Students must complete at least 30 credits in visual arts, including:

Honours Minor (Art History)

Students must complete at least 30 credits in visual arts, including:

  • FA/ARTH 1130 6.00;
  • six credits in art history at each of the 2000, 3000 and 4000 levels;
  • six additional credits in studies courses.

BA Program

Students must complete at least 42 credits in visual arts, including:

21 credits of in practicum courses, including:

  • FA/VISA 1010 6.00;
  • a maximum of 9 credits at the 2000 level;
  • a maximum of 6 credits at the 3000 level;

21 credits in studies courses, including:

  • a maximum of 15 within the first two years, including: FA/VISA 1000 3.00 and FA/ARTH 1130 6.00, taken in first year;
  • a maximum of six credits at the 3000 level;
  • no 4000 level courses may be taken as part of the BA General;
  • a maximum of 15 credits may be taken in the major each year; of these, only 9 credits may be practicum.

At least 18 of the 90 credits taken must be at the 3000 level (including the 12 credits in the major).

Students must also complete:

12 elective credits chosen from the other departments in AMPD

6 credits from the FA/1900 3.00 series of courses, outside the Visual Art & Art History major

18 credits of General Education courses: 6 credits from each of Humanities, Social Science and Natural Science (or approved substitutes)

12 credits non-AMPD electives

3 free elective credits – may include major FA/VISA or FA/ARTH

3 free elective credits – excluding major FA/VISA or FA/ARTH
