Honours Majors
Students must complete the requirements of the Specialized Honours BA (cinema and media studies), the Specialized Honours BFA - Screenwriting or the Specialized Honours BFA - Production degree.
Specialized Honours BFA Program – Screenwriting
Students must complete at least 48 credits in Cinema and Media Arts, including:
- FA/FILM 1020 3.00;
- FA/FILM 1120 3.00;
- FA/FILM 1400 6.00;
- FA/FILM 2120 6.00 or FA/FILM 2121 6.00;
- FA/FILM 3120 6.00;
- FA/FILM 3124 3.00;
- FA/FILM 3401 3.00;
- 12 additional credits from: FA/FILM 4120 6.00, FA/FILM 4124 6.00, FA/FILM 4126 6.00;
- 6 additional credits from: FA/FILM 2200 3.00, FA/FILM 2230 3.00, FA/FILM 3200 3.00, FA/FILM 3230 6.00;
- 12 focused elective credits from upper-level courses within the Department of Cinema and Media Studies (including other courses in Screenwriting) or, with the approval of the Screenwriting Committee, courses taught within other units in Creative Writing, Literature, Humanities, AMPD.
Students must also complete:
12 elective credits chosen from the other departments in AMPD
6 credits from the FA/1900 3.00 series of courses, outside the Film major
18 credits of General Education courses: 6 credits from each of Humanities, Social Science and Natural Science (or approved substitutes)
6 credits non-AMPD electives
24 free elective credits
Specialized Honours BFA Program – Production
Students must complete at least 60 credits in Cinema and Media Arts, including:
- FA/FILM 1020 3.00;
- FA/FILM 1120 3.00;
- FA/FILM 1400 6.00;
- FA/FILM 2010 9.00;
- FA/FILM 2120 6.00;
- FA/FILM 3401 3.00;
- 6 additional credits from:
- 24 credits at the 3000 or 4000 level, of which at least 18 credits must be in studio (production or screenwriting) courses including 3 credits from one of: FA/FILM 4135 3.00, FA/FILM 4155 3.00, FA/FILM 4165 3.00, FA/FILM 4175 3.00, FA/PANF 4140 3.00.
Students must also complete:
12 elective credits chosen from the other departments in AMPD
6 credits from the FA/1900 3.00 series of courses, outside the Film major
18 credits of General Education courses: 6 credits from each of Humanities, Social Science and Natural Science (or approved substitutes)
6 credits non-AMPD electives
24 free elective credits

- FA/FILM 3401 3.00;
- 12 further credits in Cinema and Media Studies.
BA 90 Credit Program – Cinema and Media Studies

Students must complete at least 42 credits in film, including:
- FA/FILM 1001 3.00;
- FA/FILM 1120 3.00;
- FA/FILM 1400 6.00;
- FA/FILM 1405 3.00;
- FA/FILM 2200 3.00;
- FA/FILM 2230 3.00;
- FA/FILM 3200 3.00;
- FA/FILM 3230 3.00;
- FA/FILM 3401 3.00;
- 12 additional credits in film, including at least nine at the 3000 or 4000 level.
Students must also complete:
12 elective credits chosen from the other departments in AMPD including 6 credits from the FA/1900 3.00 series of courses, outside the Film major
18 credits of General Education courses: 6 credits from each of Humanities, Social Science and Natural Science (or approved substitutes)
18 free elective credits
York-Sheridan Joint Degree-Diploma in Film and Media Arts
This joint program provides opportunities for students in York’s Department of Cinema and Media Arts Honours degree programs and Sheridan’s Media Arts Program to earn an Honours degree and a CAAT diploma in five years. The joint program can be pursued in the following ways:
- York Department of Cinema and Media Arts BFA Honours students concentrating in production may, after three years (90 credits) at York, apply to study for two years (four semesters) in the Media Arts diploma program at the Sheridan Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning.
- Sheridan students in the Media Arts program who have completed three years of approved diploma program courses with a minimum B average may, after three years of study at Sheridan, apply to enter the York BA or BFA Honours programs in Cinema and Media Arts and complete an Honours degree in two years.
