Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies (AP) – Certificate of Proficiency in Japanese Language

The Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics offers a certificate of language proficiency and courses in Japanese. Students may also pursue a minor degree program in Japanese Studies.

Graduating with a certificate: except where otherwise stated, a minimum cumulative grade point average of 4.00 is required to satisfy certificate requirements. Students must also submit an application to graduate from a certificate program. Applications should be obtained from and filed with the unit administering the certificate program. Transcript notation that the requirements for a certificate have been completed will be made once the Registrar’s Office has received notice from the unit administering the program. Certificates will not be conferred until candidates have successfully completed an undergraduate degree program if they are simultaneously enrolled in a degree and a certificate program. The Faculty does not award certificates retroactively. Refer to the Academic Standards section for details of the undergraduate certificate minimum standards.

York University students may earn a Certificate of Proficiency in Japanese Language concurrent with fulfillment of the requirements for a bachelor’s degree. This certificate is also open to students who already hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and who are admissible according to Faculty and University policies. This certificate is not, however, open to students who are pursuing or who already hold a degree in Japanese.

The Certificate of Proficiency in Japanese language offered by DLLL accredits candidates who have advanced knowledge of the structures of Japanese allowing them to communicate in most formal and informal everyday conversations. Students who qualify for the Certificate of Proficiency in Japanese Language demonstrate oral fluency and can also manage most advanced points of grammar and style in writing and reading the target language.

To apply for the certificate, students must have completed at least 18 credits in Japanese language in the Department of Languages, Literature and Linguistics with a minimum grade of B+ in the last upper-level course taken. [amended April 22, 2016]

Note: Students who place directly in the intermediate level (2000) language course require only 12 credits to obtain the Certificate of Proficiency in Japanese.

Note: Students who place directly in an advanced language (3000) course require an additional 6 credits and must take another upper level course taught in Japanese to obtain the Certificate of Proficiency in Japanese Language.
