Program Requirements

AK/MATH 1710 6.00 is required to fulfill the general education requirement. Refer to AK/MATH 1710 6.00 course description note for further details. Students must refer to individual course descriptions for prerequisite requirements.

General Prerequisites for 3000 level or above courses: Students must have successfully completed all 1000- and 2000-level required courses in information technology and mathematics before taking courses in information technology at the 3000 or 4000 level including earning a minimum grade of C in either AK/ITEC 1630 3.00 or AK/ITEC 2010 3.00.

Program Note: BA ITEC streams are not open to students completing a Double Major or Major/Minor program.

BA: 90 credits

Required courses outside the major:

Major information technology: 42 credits including:

(i) Information technology core - 30 credits:

(ii) 12 additional credits as specified in the requirements for one of the five streams described below.

At least 12 credits in the major must be completed at the 3000 level or above.

BA (Specialized Honours): 120 credits

Required courses outside the major:

Major information technology: 66 credits including:

(i) Information technology core - 54 credits:

(ii) 12 additional credits as specified in the requirements for one of the five streams described below.

At least 12 credits in the major must be completed at the 4000 level.

BA (Honours): 120 credits

Required courses outside the major:

Major information technology: 54 credits including:

(i) Information technology core - 42 credits:

(ii) 12 additional credits as specified in the requirements for one of the five streams described below.

At least 12 credits in the major must be completed at the 4000 level.

BA Double Major:

The BA Honours double major program in Information Technology may be pursued jointly with any other BA Honours program that provides a double major option in the Atkinson Faculty of Liberal and Professional Studies unless otherwise specified.

Required courses outside the major:

Major information technology: 42 credits including:

(i) Information technology core - 42 credits:

At least 12 credits in the major must be completed at the 4000 level.

BA Honours Major/Minor:

The BA Honours Major/Minor program in Information Technology may be pursued jointly with any other BA Honours program that provides a major/minor option in the Atkinson Faculty of Liberal and Professional Studies unless otherwise specified.

Required courses outside the major:

Major information technology: 42 credits including:

(i) Information technology core - 42 credits:

At least 12 credits in the major must be completed at the 4000 level.

BA Honours Minor:

The BA Honours Minor program in Information Technology must be pursued jointly with any other BA Honours program that provides a major/minor option in the Atkinson Faculty of Liberal and Professional Studies unless otherwise specified.

Required courses outside the minor:

Minor information technology: 33 credits including:

Six credits in the minor must be completed at the 4000 level.

Note: Students choosing this option for whom English is a second language are advised that they must have equivalent to native ability in English. To remain in the technical and professional writing option, a student must achieve a minimum grade of C+ in each course. Upon completing the option, students may take a final comprehensive examination for the Certificate in Technical and Professional Writing.

Technology and Society Stream

1. Students who have successfully completed AK/AS/SC/COSC/CSE 1020 3.00 prior to entering the program may substitute it for AK/ITEC 1620 3.00.

2. Students who have successfully completed AK/AS/SC/COSC/CSE 1030 3.00 prior to entering the program may substitute it for AK/ITEC 2620 3.00.

3. Students who have successfully completed AK/AS/SC/COSC/CSE 3421 3.00 prior to entering the program may substitute it for AK/ITEC 3220 3.00.

4. Students who have successfully completed AK/AS/SC/COSC/CSE 3461 3.00 prior to entering the program may substitute it for AK/ITEC 3230 3.00.

5. Students who have successfully completed COSC/CSE courses prior to entering the program may replace AK/ITEC 1000 3.00 with any COSC/CSE course that has not already been used towards the fulfillment of another requirement. Should no such courses remain, students will replace AK/ITEC 1000 3.00 with any ITEC course not specifically required for completion of the major (core or stream).

6. Students who have successfully completed AK/AS/SC/MATH 2560 3.00, AK/AS/SC/MATH 2570 3.00 or AK/AS/SC/MATH 1131 3.00 prior to entering the program may substitute it for AK/AS/SC/MATH 2565 3.00.

7. Students who have successfully completed AK/AS/SC/MATH 1550 6.00 prior to entering the program may substitute it for AK/AS/SC/MATH 2565 3.00 and AK/AS/SC/MATH 2320 3.00.
