Geography - Applied Geography

Specialized Honours BA Program

Applied geography uses geographical theory and methodology to solve real world problems that have a geographical dimension. The Program in Applied Geography is a Specialized Honours undergraduate program directed to students seeking employment in occupations in planning, business, industry, and government where geographical skills are an asset. Qualified students may also apply to graduate level programs in planning, geography, and cognate applied fields. The program combines concepts and technical skills in applied geography with a knowledge base to situate both. In their fourth year, students may obtain academic credit for an approved work experience. The goal of the program is to present practical and professionally oriented aspects of geography.

To Enter the Program:

1. Students are encouraged to apply for admission to the Program in Applied Geography after their first year of study (successful completion of at least 24 credits). Students may register in the program later in their studies, but the degree requirements reduce the flexibility of late enrolees who may find it necessary to complete more than 120 credits to satisfy the requirements of this program.

2. To be eligible for admission students must have achieved a cumulative grade point average of at least 5.0 (C+).

To Graduate:

Students must complete 120 credits, achieving a cumulative grade point average of 6.0 (B) in the required geography courses and an overall cumulative grade point average of 5.0 (C+). Note that Faculty of Arts regulations require 18 credits at the 4000 level for graduation.

Required Courses:

72 credits are required, as follows:

• AS/GEOG 1400 6.0;
• AS/GEOG 1410 6.0;
• AS/GEOG 2130 3.0,
• AS/GEOG 2420 3.0,
• 12 credits chosen from the following: AS/GEOG 2050 6.0, AS/GEOG 2100 6.0, or AS/GEOG 2300 6.0;
• AS/GEOG 3180 3.0;
• AS/GEOG 3420 3.0;
• 12 credits chosen from the following: AS/GEOG 3110 6.0, AS/GEOG 3120 6.0, AS/GEOG 3130 3.0, AS/GEOG 3140 3.0, AS/GEOG 3440 3.0, or AS/GEOG 3770 3.0;
• 18 credits chosen from the following: AS/GEOG 4000 6.0, AS/GEOG 4160 3.0, AS/GEOG 4170 3.0, AS/GEOG 4220 3.0, AS/GEOG 4240 3.0, AS/GEOG 4260 3.0, AS/GEOG 4340 3.0, AS/GEOG 4370 3.0, AS/GEOG 4380 3.0, AS/GEOG 4420 3.0, or AS/GEOG 4440 3.0;
• AS/SOSC 3710 6.0.

The following courses are recommended as useful for applied geography, although none are specifically required.
