The Certificate in Professional Writing in French, offered by the Department of French Studies, consists in a progressive training in all aspects of writing: grammatical and lexical correctness, stylistic adequacy and variety, genres and practices in public and professional writing, computational writing tools and document design, written communication effectiveness. The certificate aims at training versatile professional writers, who will have an extensive understanding of the way professional written communication works and will create documents addressing reader’s needs and expectations.
The program is geared to both francophone and non-francophone students who wish to acquire professional writing skills. Students may take this certificate within a bachelor degree program or as a stand-alone certificate.
Before submitting an application for admission to York University and taking the placement assessment, external applicants are advised to first submit to the Department of French Studies at Glendon a letter of intent detailing their reasons for applying and their work experience so that the department can help them determine if the certificate is well-suited for their needs. This letter must be e-mailed to the Department of French Studies at Glendon to the attention of the coordinator of the certificate.
Admission requirements
1. General conditions
a. Applicants must have completed 24 University credits or have acquired at least one year of relevant work experience in an area where writing is important.
b. Internal applicants must have achieved a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 5.00 (C +) during their studies at York University. To register for the certificate, students must submit an application to the Office of Academic Services.
c. External applicants must meet the general admission requirements of York University and submit an application to the Admissions Office.
2. Language skills
Applicants must demonstrate that their general writing skills are sufficient to take full advantage of training in professional writing. The skill level is assessed undergoing a placement test in French language as a second language or in French as a first language, as appropriate. The minimum level required is GL/FRAN 2210 3.00 (for francophones) or GL/FRLS 2240 6.00 (for non-francophones).
Graduation Requirements
In order to receive the certificate, students must achieve:
- a minimum grade of B in each General Writing course;
- a minimum grade of C+ in each Professional Writing course;
- a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average of 5.0 (C+).
Students must also submit, to the Office of Academic Services, an application to graduate from a certificate program. The certificate will not be conferred until candidates have successfully completed an undergraduate degree program if they are simultaneously enrolled in a degree and this certificate program.
