English and Professional Writing - Arts


Note: With the establishment of the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies on July 1, 2009, degrees and programs in the Faculty of Arts will be moved to the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies as of the Fall/Winter 2009-2010 Session. Grandparenting provisions have been developed for students continuing in degrees and programs currently offered in the Faculty of Arts. Details are available on the York University Current Students Web site (http://www.yorku.ca/yorkweb/cs.htm).

Note: For purposes of meeting program requirements, all foundations courses will count as six credits towards the major.

Note: Students may complete a maximum of six credits from the 2200-series of AS/EN courses for major credit in English and Professional Writing.

Students must complete the program core courses and the stream requirements, including:

Area Requirements

All English courses (above the 1000 level) are placed in seven areas. Please consult the English section of this calendar for a listing of courses by area. Students must complete courses from three of the areas (other than Area 7) as follows:

  • at least six credits chosen from Area 4.1 or 4.2 at the 3000 or 4000 level;
  • nine credits chosen from two areas other than Areas 4.1, 4.2, or 7, including at least six credits from one of Area 1, Area 2, Area 3, Area 4.3, Area 5 or Area 6.

Students must choose one of the following professional writing streams in consultation with the program coordinator.

Out-of-Faculty Courses

Subject to course exclusions, program requirements/restrictions, and residence requirements, out-of-Faculty courses may normally count for program credit toward a Faculty of Arts degree.

The following out-of-Faculty courses will not count for program credit toward a Faculty of Arts degree in English and professional writing:
