Political Science
The Department of Political Science also offers
a Specialized Honours degree in global political studies and public
policy and administration; for details see the Global Political
Studies and Public Policy and Administration sections.
Majors registered for the BA degree may, with
the permission of the department, count toward the major requirement
a maximum of 15 credits in political science taken outside of the
department. Honours BA majors may count toward the major requirement
a maximum of 21 credits taken outside of the department.
Breadth Requirements for Degree Programs in
Political Science
BA and Honours Minor BA political science majors
must take at least six credits in each of at least two of the department's
fields: political theory, canadian politics, international relations,
empirical theory and methodology, and comparative world politics.
Six credits must be a 2000-level field introduction.
Honours BA and Specialized Honours BA political
science majors must take at least six credits in each of at least
three of the department's fields, including AS/POLS 2040 6.0.
With the written permission of the undergraduate director, six credits
at the 3000 or 4000 level in political theory may be substituted
for AS/POLS 2040 6.0. This provision is intended primarily for students
who become political science Honours majors after completing 60
credits. In any case, all Honours major students must take at least
six credits at the 2000 level.
Specialized Honours BA Program
Students will take at least 54 credits in political
science, including AS/POLS 1000 6.0, AS/POLS 2040 6.0, and at least
12 credits at the 4000 level.
Honours BA Program
Students will take at least 42 credits in political
science, including AS/POLS 1000 6.0, AS/POLS 2040 6.0, and at least
12 credits at the 4000 level.
Honours Double Major BA Program
The Honours BA program described above may be
pursued jointly with any other Honours bachelor's degree program
in the Faculties of Arts, Environmental Studies, Fine Arts, or with
a major in earth and atmospheric science or physics and astronomy
in the Faculty of Pure and Applied Science.
Honours Double Major Interdisciplinary BA Programs
Political science may be linked with any Honours
Double Major Interdisciplinary BA program in the Faculty of Arts.
Students must take at least 36 credits in political science and
at least 36 credits in the interdisciplinary program. Courses taken
to meet political science requirements cannot also be used to meet
the requirements of the interdisciplinary program. Students in these
interdisciplinary programs must take a total of at least 18 credits
at the 4000 level, including at least six credits in political science
and six credits in the interdisciplinary program. For further details

The 36 credits in political science must include:
- AS/POLS 1000 6.0;
- AS/POLS 2040 6.0;
- at least six credits at the 4000 level in political science.
Honours Major/Minor BA Program
The Honours BA program described above may be
pursued jointly with any Honours Minor bachelor's degree program
in the Faculties of Arts, Environmental Studies, Fine Arts, or with
a minor in biology, chemistry, or physics and astronomy in the Faculty
of Pure and Applied Science.
Honours Minor BA Program
The Honours Minor must be pursued jointly with
an Honours Major/Minor BA program in the Faculty of Arts.
The Honours Minor in political science comprises
at least 30 credits, including AS/POLS 1000 6.0, six credits as
a 2000-level field introduction course and at least six credits
at the 4000 level.
Note: Faculty of Arts legislation requires
that, in order to obtain an Honours BA (120 credits), students must
take a total of at least 18 credits at the 4000 level including
at least 12 credits at the 4000 level in each Honours major or Specialized
Honours major.
BA Program
Students will take at least 30 credits in political
science, including AS/POLS 1000 6.0, six credits as a 2000-level
field introduction course, and 12 credits at the 3000 level.
