Mathematics and Statistics

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers Honours BA and BA degree programs in four major subjects:

The degree programs in each major are listed separately. A student should choose one of these majors based on interest and employment goals; but it is possible to change a major provided the requirements of the desired major can be met.

Applied Mathematics BA Programs

Program Core

All major degree candidates, except for the Honours Minor, must complete the program core:

  • AS/COSC 1540 3.0 or AS/COSC 2031 3.0; AS/MATH 1013 3.0; AS/MATH 1014 3.0; AS/MATH 1016 1.0; AS/MATH 1017 1.0; AS/MATH 1021 3.0; AS/MATH 2015 3.0; AS/MATH 2018 1.0; AS/MATH 2270 3.0; AS/MATH 2041 3.0; and AS/MATH 3241 3.0.

In addition, all degree candidates must select a number of additional credits from MATH courses including a number (depending on their program) from the following list.

Specialized Honours BA Program

  • The program core;
  • AS/MATH 2222 3.0; AS/MATH 2030 3.0; AS/MATH 3110 3.0; AS/MATH 3210 3.0; AS/MATH 3242 3.0; and AS/MATH 3410 3.0;
  • 21 additional credits from list 1, including AS/MATH 3260 3.0 or AS/MATH 3170 6.0, and also including 12 credits at the 4000 level.

Honours BA Program

  • The program core;
  • AS/MATH 3242 3.0 or AS/MATH 3170 6.0;
  • 12 credits at the 4000 level from list 1.

Honours Double Major BA Program

The Honours BA program described above may be pursued jointly with any other Honours bachelor's degree program in the Faculties of Arts, Environmental Studies or Fine Arts.

Honours Major/Minor BA Program

The Honours BA program described above may be pursued jointly with any Honours Minor bachelor's degree program in the Faculties of Arts, Environmental Studies, Fine Arts, or with a minor in biology, chemistry, or physics and astronomy in the Faculty of Pure and Applied Science.

Honours Minor BA Program

The Honours Minor must be pursued jointly with an Honours Major/Minor BA program in the Faculty of Arts.

The Honours Minor in applied mathematics consists of:

  • first-year calculus (six credits at the 1000 level without second digit 5);
  • AS/COSC 1540 3.0 or AS/COSC 2031 3.0, AS/MATH 1021 3.0;
  • AS/MATH 2015 3.0;
  • any two of AS/MATH 2041 3.0, AS/MATH 2270 3.0, or AS/MATH 2022 3.0;
  • nine additional credits, including at least one of AS/MATH 3170 6.0 or AS/MATH 3241 3.0 or AS/MATH 3260 3.0, with the remaining credits from list 1 courses.

Note: Faculty of Arts legislation requires that, in order to obtain an Honours BA (120 credits), students must take a total of at least 18 credits at the 4000 level, including at least 12 credits at the 4000 level in each Honours major or Specialized Honours major.

BA Program

  • The program core;
  • AS/MATH 2030 3.0 or AS/MATH 2222 3.0 or AS/MATH 2320 3.0;
  • 12 additional credits at the 3000 level or higher from list 1.

Mathematics BA Programs

Mathematics Honours Program Core

  • AS/MATH 1000 3.0, AS/MATH 1010 3.0;
  • one of AS/MATH 1090 3.0, AS/MATH 1190 3.0, AS/MATH 2090 3.0, or AS/MATH 2320 3.0;
  • AS/MATH 1021 3.0, AS/MATH 2022 3.0;
  • AS/MATH 2310 3.0, AS/MATH 3010 3.0;
  • AS/MATH 3020 6.0 or both AS/MATH 3131 3.0 and AS/MATH 3132 3.0;
  • AS/MATH 3210 3.0;
  • six credits chosen from: AS/MATH 4000 6.0 (4000 3.0) (projects in pure mathematics), AS/MATH 4010 6.0, AS/MATH 4020 6.0, AS/MATH 4030 3.0, AS/MATH 4050 6.0, AS/MATH 4080 6.0, AS/MATH 4110 3.0, AS/MATH 4120 3.0, AS/MATH 4130 3.0, AS/MATH 4140 3.0, AS/MATH 4150 3.0, AS/MATH 4160 3.0, AS/MATH 4170 6.0, AS/MATH 4210 3.0, AS/MATH 4230 3.0, AS/MATH 4250 6.0, AS/MATH 4280 3.0, AS/MATH 4290 3.0, AS/MATH 4430 3.0, AS/MATH 4630 3.0, or AS/MATH 4730 3.0.

Note: If AS/MATH 1010 3.0 is replaced by another calculus course, then AS/MATH 3110 3.0 must be taken as part of the Honours program core. If one or more of AS/MATH 1021 3.0 or AS/MATH 2022 3.0 is replaced by other linear algebra courses and if the grades obtained were less than A, then two of AS/MATH 1090 3.0, AS/MATH 1190 3.0, AS/MATH 2090 3.0 or AS/MATH 2320 3.0 must be taken as part of the Honours program core.

Specialized Honours BA Program

The mathematics Honours program core and at least 30 additional major (i.e. without second digit 5) AS/MATH credits including at least six credits at the 4000 level. One of AS/MATH 4010 6.0 or AS/MATH 4020 6.0 must be included in this program.

Honours BA Program

The mathematics Honours program core and at least six additional major (i.e. without second digit 5) AS/MATH credits at the 4000 level.

Honours Double Major BA Program

The Honours BA program described above may be pursued jointly with any other Honours bachelor's degree program in the Faculties of Arts, Environmental Studies or Fine Arts.

Honours Double Major BA Interdisciplinary Programs

The Honours BA program described above may be linked with any Honours Double Major Interdisciplinary BA program in the Faculty of Arts. Students must take at least 42 credits in mathematics and at least 36 credits in the interdisciplinary program. Courses taken to meet mathematics requirements cannot also be used to meet the requirements of the interdisciplinary program. Students in these interdisciplinary programs must take a total of at least 18 credits at the 4000 level, including at least 12 credits in mathematics and six credits in the interdisciplinary program. Honours Major/Minor BA Program

The Honours BA program described above may be pursued jointly with any Honours Minor bachelor's degree program in the Faculties of Arts, Environmental Studies, Fine Arts, or with a minor in biology, chemistry, or physics and astronomy in the Faculty of Pure and Applied Science.

Honours Minor BA Program

The Honours Minor must be pursued jointly with an Honours Major/Minor BA program in the Faculty of Arts.

The Honours Minor in mathematics consists of:

  • first-year calculus (six credits at the 1000 level without second digit 5);
  • one of AS/MATH 1090 3.0, AS/MATH 1190 3.0, AS/MATH 2090 3.0, or AS/MATH 2320 3.0;
  • AS/MATH 1021 3.0;
  • AS/MATH 2022 3.0;
  • AS/MATH 2310 3.0;
  • at least 12 additional major (i.e., without second digit 5) AS/MATH credits at the 3000 level or higher.

Note: Faculty of Arts legislation requires that, in order to obtain an Honours BA (120 credits), students must take a total of at least 18 credits at the 4000 level, including at least 12 credits at the 4000 level in each Honours major or Specialized Honours major.

BA Program

  • first-year calculus (six credits at the 1000 level without second digit 5);

  • AS/MATH 2022 3.0;

  • at least 12 additional major (i.e., without second digit 5) AS/MATH credits at the 3000 level or higher.

Note: Students who have taken AS/MATH 1530 3.0 and AS/MATH 1540 3.0 or AS/MATH 1550 6.0 may not take AS/MATH 1300 3.0, but will be considered to have credit for AS/MATH 1300 3.0 and may take AS/MATH 1310 3.0.

Mathematics for Commerce Programs

These degree programs are open to any student, but are of special interest to students who enter the Faculty of Arts in the Coordinated Business Program. Graduates with an Honours BA degree or BA degree in mathematics for commerce may wish to apply to an MBA program.

Honours BA Program

The Honours BA Program in Mathematics for Commerce has two streams, and students must complete the requirements of one of the streams. The Operations Research Stream (industrial optimization) and the Actuarial Stream (insurance) require more intensive calculus courses than the BA Program in Mathematics for Commerce, starting in first year.

Operations Research Stream

  • AS/MATH 1300 3.0, AS/MATH 1310 3.0, AS/MATH 2310 3.0;
  • AS/COSC 1520 3.0, AS/COSC 1530 3.0;
  • AS/MATH 1131 3.0, AS/MATH 2030 3.0, AS/MATH 2131 3.0;
  • AS/MATH 1021 3.0, AS/MATH 2022 3.0;
  • AS/MATH 3170 6.0, AS/MATH 4170 6.0;
  • AS/MATH 3330 3.0, AS/MATH 3034 3.0 or AS/MATH 3430 3.0;
  • six additional credits in AS/MATH at the 4000 level.

Note: AS/MATH 2560 3.0 and AS/MATH 2570 3.0 may be substituted for AS/MATH 1131 3.0.

Actuarial Stream

Honours Minor BA Program

The Honours Minor must be pursued jointly with an Honours Major/Minor BA program in the Faculty of Arts.

Students must complete the following courses or approved equivalents:

  • AS/MATH 1550 6.0 or AS/MATH 1530 3.0 and AS/MATH 1540 3.0;
  • AS/MATH 1581 3.0, AS/COSC 1520 3.0;
  • AS/MATH 2560 3.0, AS/MATH 2570 3.0;
  • AS/MATH 2221 3.0, AS/MATH 3170 6.0;
  • AS/MATH 3330 3.0, AS/MATH 3430 3.0 or AS/MATH 3034 3.0.

Note: Faculty of Arts legislation requires that, in order to obtain an Honours BA (120 credits), students must take a total of at least 18 credits at the 4000 level, including at least 12 credits at the 4000 level in each Honours major or Specialized Honours major.

BA Program

Note 1: In the Honours BA program, for calculus and for linear algebra, the courses AS/MATH 1013 3.0, AS/MATH 1014 3.0, AS/MATH 1300 3.0, AS/MATH 1310 3.0, AS/MATH 1025 3.0, AS/MATH 2221 3.0 and AS/MATH 2222 3.0 will be accepted in this program, but are not recommended.

Note 2: Students who have completed either AS/MATH 3330 3.0 or AS/MATH 3230 3.0 before September 1993 can use AS/MATH 3330 3.0 and AS/MATH 3230 3.0 instead of AS/MATH 3033 3.0 and AS/MATH 3034 3.0, respectively.

Honours Double Major BA Program

The Honours BA program described above may be pursued jointly with any other Honours bachelor's degree program in the Faculties of Arts, Environmental Studies or Fine Arts.

Honours Double Major BA Interdisciplinary Programs

The Honours BA program described above may be linked with any Honours Double Major Interdisciplinary BA program in the Faculty of Arts. Students must take at least 48 credits in statistics and at least 36 credits in the interdisciplinary program. Courses taken to meet statistics requirements cannot also be used to meet the requirements of the interdisciplinary program. Students in these interdisciplinary programs must take a total of at least 18 credits at the 4000 level, including at least 12 credits in statistics and six credits in the interdisciplinary program. Honours Major/Minor BA Program

The Honours BA program described above may be pursued jointly with any Honours Minor bachelor's degree program in the Faculties of Arts, Environmental Studies, Fine Arts, or with a minor in biology, chemistry, or physics and astronomy in the Faculty of Pure and Applied Science.

Honours Minor BA Program

The Honours Minor must be pursued jointly with an Honours Major/Minor BA program in the Faculty of Arts.

The Honours Minor in statistics requires:

  • first-year calculus (six credits at the 1000 level without second digit 5);
  • AS/MATH 1021 3.0, AS/MATH 2022 3.0;
  • AS/MATH 1131 3.0, AS/MATH 2030 3.0, AS/MATH 2131 3.0;
  • nine credits from 2000 level or higher AS/MATH courses with third digit 3.

Note 1: Students who have taken AS/MATH 1530 3.0 and AS/MATH 1540 3.0 or AS/MATH 1550 6.0 may not take AS/MATH 1300 3.0, but will be considered to have credit for AS/MATH 1300 3.0 and may take AS/MATH 1310 3.0.

Note 2: AS/MATH 2221 3.0 and AS/MATH 2222 3.0 are not recommended, but will be accepted as degree credit exclusions for AS/MATH 1021 3.0 and AS/MATH 2022 3.0.

Note 1: Students who have taken AS/MATH 1530 3.0 and AS/MATH 1540 3.0 or AS/MATH 1550 6.0 may not take AS/MATH 1300 3.0, but will be considered to have credit for AS/MATH 1300 3.0 and may take AS/MATH 1310 3.0.
