Information Technology

Note: For purposes of meeting program requirements, all foundations courses will count as six credits towards the major or minor.

The departments of Mathematics and Statistics, Computer Science, Philosophy, Political Science and the divisions of Social Science and Humanities offer a pattern of study that combines departmental specialization within the field of information technology. The Information Technology Program is housed in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

Recommendation - 1000-level nine-credit foundations course

It is strongly recommended that students choose one of the following courses to meet the 1000-level general education/foundations requirement.

  • AS/HUMA 1650 9.0 or AS/SOSC 1731 9.0.

Program Core - Group A, Group B, and Group C Requirements

General Prerequisites

All 3000- and 4000-level ITEC courses require the following general prerequisites. Please refer to specific course descriptions for information regarding additional prerequisites.

  • AS/ITEC 2010 3.0;
  • AS/ITEC 2620 3.0, with a grade of at least C;
  • AS/MATH 1190 3.0;
  • AS/MATH 2560 3.0;
  • AS/MATH 2570 3.0;
  • AS/MATH 2320 3.0.

Note: For satisfaction of the general prerequisites, AS/ITEC 1030 3.0, with a grade of at least C, or AS/COSC 1030 3.0, with a grade of at least C, or AS/ITEC 2011 3.0, or AS/COSC 2011 3.0 may be substituted for AS/ITEC 2620 3.0.

Note: The general prerequisites for upper-level ITEC courses will be deemed to be met for information technology and applied mathematics, information technology and mathematics, and information technology and statistics majors who have successfully completed AS/ITEC 2010 3.0; AS/ITEC 2620 3.0, with a grade of at least C; and at least 12 credits of mathematics.

Group A - ITEC Core Requirement

Students must complete the following:

  • AS/ITEC 1010 3.0;
  • AS/ITEC 1011 3.0;
  • AS/ITEC 1620 3.0;
  • AS/ITEC 1630 3.0;
  • AS/ITEC 2010 3.0;
  • AS/ITEC 2620 3.0;
  • AS/ITEC 3210 3.0;
  • AS/ITEC 3220 3.0;
  • AS/ITEC 3230 3.0.

Mathematics Core Requirement

  • AS/MATH 1190 3.0;
  • AS/MATH 2560 3.0;
  • AS/MATH 2570 3.0;
  • AS/MATH 2320 3.0.

One humanities or social science 2000-level nine-credit foundations course chosen from the following:

  • AS/HUMA 2920 9.0 or AS/SOSC 2080 9.0.

Note: The 2000-level nine-credit course in humanities or social science must be the alternate of the 1000-level nine-credit humanities or social science course chosen to meet the general education/foundations requirement.

Group B Core Requirement - Ethics and Public Policy Related Courses

  • Six credits chosen from the following: AS/PHIL 2075 3.0, AS/PHIL 3050 3.0, AS/PHIL 4150 3.0, AS/POLS 2610 6.0, or AS/POLS 3100 3.0.

Group C Core Requirement - Arts Information Technology Related Courses

  • Three credits chosen from the following: AS/ANTH 4200H 6.0, AS/GEOG 3650 6.0, AS/HIST 3785 6.0, AS/HIST 3870 6.0, AS/HIST 4680 6.0, AS/HUMA 3350 6.0, AS/HUMA 3920 6.0, AS/HUMA 4225 6.0, AS/HUMA 4225E 6.0, AS/MATH 3500 6.0 (cross-listed to: AS/HUMA 3990A 6.0), AS/PHIL 2070 3.0, AS/POLS 4000L 3.0, AS/POLS 4185 6.0, AS/SOCI 2070 6.0, AS/SOCI 3610 3.0, AS/SOCI 3620 6.0, AS/SOCI 3710 6.0, AS/SOCI 3840 6.0, AS/SOSC 2311 6.0, AS/SOSC 3310 6.0, AS/SOSC 3311 6.0, or AS/SOSC 3316 6.0.

Note: Students may take other courses for credit towards the group B and group C requirements subject to degree credit exclusion and in-Faculty regulations, and with the approval of the program coordinator.

Note: The following courses will not count towards the Faculty of Arts elective requirement: AK/AS/SC/COSC 1520 3.0, AK/AS/SC/COSC 1530 3.0, AK/AS/SC/COSC 1540 3.0, any mathematics course with second digit 5, or AK/MATH 1710 6.0.

Note: Group B or group C courses successfully completed beyond the program requirements may count towards the Faculty of Arts elective requirement.

Specialized Honours BA Program

Students must complete at least 78 credits, including:

  • The program core;
  • AS/ITEC 4010 3.0;
  • AS/ITEC 4020 3.0;
  • AS/ITEC 4030 3.0;
  • An additional 15 credits from the list of group C courses.

Students must take a minimum of 36 credits at the 3000 or 4000 level including at least 18 credits at the 4000 level. Of the 18 credits at the 4000 level, nine credits must be taken in information technology (ITEC), and six credits must be taken from the list of group B or group C courses.

Note: The Faculty of Arts elective requirement is fulfilled upon successful completion of 18 credits from the list of group B or group C courses.

Honours Double Major BA Program

Information technology may be pursued jointly with any other Honours bachelor's degree program in the Faculties of Arts (with the exception of computer science), Environmental Studies or Fine Arts.

Students must complete at least 63 credits, including:

  • The program core, including three credits at the 4000 level from group B or group C courses;
  • AS/ITEC 4010 3.0;
  • AS/ITEC 4020 3.0;
  • AS/ITEC 4030 3.0.

Honours Major/Minor BA Program

Information technology may be pursued jointly with any Honours Minor bachelor's degree program in the Faculties of Arts (with the exception of computer science), Environmental Studies or Fine Arts.

Students must complete at least 63 credits, including:

  • The program core, including three credits at the 4000 level from group B or group C courses;
  • AS/ITEC 4010 3.0;
  • AS/ITEC 4020 3.0;
  • AS/ITEC 4030 3.0.

Note: Faculty of Arts legislation requires that, in order to obtain an Honours BA (120 credits), students must take a total of at least 18 credits at the 4000 level, including at least 12 credits at the 4000 level in each Honours major or Specialized Honours major.

BA Program

Students must complete at least 54 credits, including:

  • The program core.

Students must take a minimum of 18 credits at the 3000 or 4000 level, of which at least 12 credits must be at or above the 3000 level in information technology (ITEC) courses or approved group B or group C courses.

Students must complete at least 102 credits, including:
