German Studies

Note: For purposes of meeting program requirements, all foundations courses will count as six credits towards the major or minor.

Note: Students who are exempted from German language courses based on their knowledge of German must still successfully complete the total number of credits required for their chosen stream.

As of Fall/Winter 2002-2003, a new numbering sequence is in place for German language courses. Changes are as follows:

  • AS/GER 2000 6.0æformerly AS/GER 1050 6.0.
  • AS/GER 3000 6.0æformerly AS/GER 2040 6.0.
  • AS/GER 4000 6.0æformerly AS/GER 3040 6.0.
  • AS/GER 4001 3.0æformerly AS/GER 3043 3.0.
  • AS/GER 4002 3.0æformerly AS/GER 3045 3.0.

Honours BA Program

German Language, Literature and Culture Stream

Students will take at least 42 credits, including the following:

  • AS/GER 2000 6.0;
  • AS/GER 2200 6.0;
  • AS/GER 2790 9.0;
  • AS/GER 3000 6.0;
  • AS/GER 4000 6.0, or AS/GER 4001 3.0 and AS/GER 4002 3.0;
  • 12 additional credits at the 3000 or 4000 level in courses with a GER prefix (taught in German), including at least six credits at the 4000 level.

German Culture and Society Stream

Students will take at least 42 credits, including the following, and including at least 12 credits at the 4000 level:

  • AS/GER 2000 6.0;
  • AS/GER 2200 6.0 or AS/GER 2201 6.0;
  • AS/GER 2790 9.0;
  • three additional credits in courses with a GER prefix (taught either in English or German);
  • six credits chosen from: AS/HIST 3320 6.0, AS/HIST 4330 6.0, AS/POLS 3530 3.0, AS/POLS 4205 3.0, AS/POLS 4445 3.0, or equivalent;
  • 15 additional credits chosen from the German studies list of program courses.

Note: A maximum of 12 credits in German language courses may be taken for credit towards the German Culture and Society Stream.

Honours Double Major BA Program

The Honours BA program streams described above may be pursued jointly with any other Honours bachelor's degree program in the Faculties of Arts, Environmental Studies, Fine Arts, or with a major in earth and atmospheric science or physics and astronomy in the Faculty of Pure and Applied Science.

Honours Double Major Interdisciplinary BA Programs

Either stream in German studies may be linked with any Honours Double Major Interdisciplinary BA program in the Faculty of Arts. Students must take at least 36 credits in a German Studies Stream and at least 36 credits in the interdisciplinary program. Courses taken to meet German Studies Stream requirements cannot also be used to meet the requirements of the interdisciplinary program. Students in these interdisciplinary programs must take a total of at least 18 credits at the 4000 level, including at least six credits in a German Studies Stream and six credits in the interdisciplinary program. German Language, Literature and Culture Stream

Students will take at least 36 credits, including the following:

  • AS/GER 2000 6.0;
  • AS/GER 2200 6.0;
  • AS/GER 2790 9.0;
  • AS/GER 3000 6.0;
  • AS/GER 4000 6.0, or AS/GER 4001 3.0 and AS/GER 4002 3.0;
  • six additional credits at the 3000 or 4000 level in courses with a GER prefix (taught in German).

German Culture and Society Stream

Students will take at least 36 credits, including the following, and including at least six credits at the 4000 level:

  • AS/GER 2000 6.0;
  • AS/GER 2200 6.0 or AS/GER 2201 6.0;
  • AS/GER 2790 9.0;
  • three additional credits in courses with a GER prefix (taught either in English or German);
  • six credits chosen from: AS/HIST 3320 6.0, AS/HIST 4330 6.0, AS/POLS 3530 3.0, AS/POLS 4205 3.0, AS/POLS 4445 3.0, or equivalent;
  • nine additional credits chosen from the German studies list of program courses.

Note: A maximum of 12 credits in German language courses may be taken for credit towards the German Culture and Society Stream.

Honours Major/Minor BA Program

The Honours BA program streams described above may be pursued jointly with any Honours Minor bachelor's degree program in the Faculties of Arts, Environmental Studies, Fine Arts, or with a minor in biology, chemistry, or physics and astronomy in the Faculty of Pure and Applied Science.

Honours Minor BA Program

The Honours Minor streams must be pursued jointly with an Honours Major/Minor BA program in the Faculty of Arts.

German Language, Literature and Culture Stream

Students will take at least 30 credits, including the following:

  • AS/GER 2000 6.0;
  • AS/GER 2200 6.0;
  • AS/GER 2790 9.0;
  • AS/GER 3000 6.0;
  • six additional credits in courses with a GER prefix (taught in German) at the 4000 level.

German Culture and Society Stream

Students will take at least 30 credits, including the following, and including at least six credits at the 4000 level:

  • AS/GER 2000 6.0;
  • AS/GER 2200 6.0 or AS/GER 2201 6.0;
  • AS/GER 2790 9.0;
  • six credits chosen from: AS/HIST 3320 6.0, AS/HIST 4330 6.0, AS/POLS 3530 3.0, AS/POLS 4205 3.0, AS/POLS 4445 3.0, or equivalent;
  • six additional credits chosen from the German studies list of program courses.

Note: A maximum of 12 credits in German language courses may be taken for credit towards the German Culture and Society Stream.

Note: Faculty of Arts legislation requires that, in order to obtain an Honours BA (120 credits), students must take a total of at least 18 credits at the 4000 level including at least 12 credits at the 4000 level in each Honours major or Specialized Honours major.

BA Program

German Language, Literature and Culture Stream

Students will take at least 30 credits, including the following:

  • AS/GER 2000 6.0;
  • AS/GER 2200 6.0;
  • AS/GER 2790 9.0;
  • AS/GER 3000 6.0;
  • six additional credits in courses with a GER prefix (taught in German) at the 3000 or 4000 level.

Students will take at least 30 credits, including the following:

  • AS/GER 2000 6.0;
  • AS/GER 2200 6.0 or AS/GER 2201 6.0;
  • AS/GER 2790 9.0;
  • six credits chosen from: AS/HIST 3320 6.0, AS/HIST 4330 6.0, AS/POLS 3530 3.0, AS/POLS 4205 3.0, AS/POLS 4445 3.0, or equivalent;
  • six additional credits at the 3000 or 4000-level chosen from the German studies list of program courses.
