Classical Studies (Classics)

Note: For purposes of meeting program requirements, all foundations courses will count as six credits towards the major or minor.

The Classical Studies Program offers courses in Greek and Latin language and literature, in ancient history, art and architecture, and philosophy.

Students will normally enter the degree programs in Classics, Latin, or Greek by enrolling in AS/GK1000 6.0 and/or AS/LA 1000 6.0 in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics. This requirement may be waived if a student can demonstrate a satisfactory knowledge of elementary ancient Greek and/or Latin, in which case, with permission of the coordinator, the student will enter the Program in Classics by enrolling in a 2000-level course in Latin and/or Greek literature.

Students will normally enter the programs in Classical Studies by taking AS/HUMA 1100 9.0 and/or AS/HUMA 1105 9.0 and/or AS/HIST 2100 6.0. Students in classical studies are strongly advised to make Greek or Latin a component of their degree program.
