Health Education and Promotion
The
goal of the Health Education and Promotion office is to involve
the York University community in their own health care. An individual
can help make major contributions to their own well being by becoming
informed about general health, health risks and the importance of
daily habits and lifestyle.
The
Nurse Educator will provide confidential counselling, information/referrals,
on contraception, HIV/AIDS, STDs, alcohol/substance abuse, smoking
cessation, nutrition and exercise, eating disorders and stress management.
The
office has a large selection of articles, books, pamphlets and videos
on various health issues. Information can be located on our Web
site located at www.yorku.ca/admin/healthed/index.htm. This site
makes a wide variety of resources accessible to students and staff.
Articles, books and videos may be borrowed on a sign-out basis.
The
Peer Education program offers workshops by trained student volunteers
on HIV/AIDS, STDs, alcohol awareness, date rape, birth control and
stress management.
Watch
for our Health Promotion events throughout the year: September -
Orientation Play, Condom Olympics. October - alcohol awareness Week,
breast cancer awareness month. November - Aids Awareness Week. December
- stress management, AIDS Red Ribbon Campaign, nutrition/body image,
alcohol/substance abuse. January - smoking cessation. February -
Health Fair, "Safe" Valentines. March/April - sunsense, stress management
and cancer awareness month.
