Certificate in Educational Studies

The General Certificate in Educational Studies is a 30-credit (five full courses) program offering students an opportunity to explore education as a field of academic inquiry. This Certificate is designed to provide students with an interdisciplinary approach to issues and contexts of educational theory and practice. The Faculty of Education's commitment to issues of equity and social justice in education inform the spirit of the Certificate. The Certificate prepares students to think about education broadly and critically, and seeks to develop an awareness of education's relationship to various communities.

Course offerings from units across seven Faculties/colleges/schools at York - including Education, Environmental Studies, Fine Arts, School of Women's Studies, Arts, Glendon and Atkinson - form the list of approved courses from which students plan their program of study. The required core courses offered through the Faculty of Education (Educational Studies I: Inquiries into Learning and Educational Studies II: Inquiries into Schooling) build a broad understanding of learning contexts and schooling practices.

Application Procedures

All interested students are required to complete an application form and submit it to the Faculty of Education Office of Student Programs by the following dates:

September admission: June 29 deadline

January admission: October 12 deadline

All admissions will be made on a first-come first-served basis, so it is important to apply early. Once a student is admitted to the program, he or she will attend an information and advising session organized by the coordinator of the Certificate to plan a program of study.
