German Studies
Note: For purposes of meeting program requirements, all Foundations
courses will count as 6 credits towards the major.
Honours Double Major Interdisciplinary BA
Program
The German Studies program is an Honours Double Major Interdisciplinary
BA program. The program is housed in the Division of Humanities.
German Studies majors must comajor in another department/discipline
in the Faculty of Arts. Students must take at least 36 credits in
the German Studies program and at least 36 credits in the comajor
according to the requirements and regulations specified by each
department/discipline for an Honours Double Major Interdisciplinary
BA program. Courses taken to meet German Studies requirements cannot
also be used to meet the requirements of the departmental/divisional
major. Students in these Interdisciplinary programs must take a
total of at least 18 credits at the 4000 level, including at least
6 credits in German Studies and 6 credits in the departmental/divisional

A student's course of study must be approved by the program coordinator.
The German Studies courses must include the following: AS/HUMA 2190
9.0; AS/GER 2200 6.0 or AS/GER 2201 6.0; AS/HIST 3320 6.0; and 18
other approved credits, including 6 credits at the 4000 level.
Students must also satisfy a language requirement by demonstrating
competence in German at least equivalent to completion of AS/GER
1020 6.0 or AS/GER 1050 6.0. A maximum of 12 credits in German language
may be taken for credit towards the German Studies portion of a
student's studies. Course offerings vary from year to year and students
are advised to consult the supplemental calendar of the Division
of Humanities, or to consult the program coordinator.
Students majoring in German Studies are encouraged to spend a
year studying at a German university. Credit towards the York degree
will be awarded for approved courses taken during this year abroad.
Financial aid is available to qualified students. Students must
be in at least their second year at York when they apply to study
in Germany. Further information is available from York International,
Room 108 Vanier College.
Note: Students may take courses for German Studies credit through
Atkinson, Glendon and the Faculty of Fine Arts (subject to Faculty
of Arts regulations on degree credit exclusions and in-Faculty courses)
by permission of the German Studies program.
