of Study
Classical Studies (Classics)
Note: For purposes of meeting program requirements, all Foundations
courses will count as 6 credits towards the major.
The Classical Studies program offers courses in Greek and Latin
language and literature, in ancient history, art and architecture,
and philosophy.
Students will normally enter the degree programs in Classics,
Latin or Greek by enrolling in AS/GK 1000 6.0 and/or AS/LA 1000
6.0 in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics.
This requirement may be waived if a student can demonstrate a satisfactory
knowledge of Elementary Ancient Greek and/or Latin, in which case,
with permission of the coordinator, the student will enter the degree
program in Classics by enrolling in a 2000-level course in Latin
and/or Greek Literature.
Students will normally enter the degree programs in Classical
Studies by taking AS/HUMA 1100 9.0 and/or AS/HUMA 1105 9.0 and/or
AS/HIST 2100 6.0. Students in Classical Studies are strongly advised
to make Greek or Latin a component of their degree program.
Specialized Honours BA Programs
Classics: Students will take at least 54 credits selected from
offerings in the Classical Studies program, of which at least 24
credits must be in Greek and 24 credits in Latin, including at least
6 credits at the 4000 level in each.
Classical Studies: Students will take at least 54 credits selected
from offerings in the Classical Studies program, including at least
24 credits in Greek and/or Latin and at least 12 credits at the
4000 level.
Honours BA Programs
Classics: Students will take at least 42 credits in a combination
of Greek and Latin, including at least 12 credits in each; and including
at least 12 credits at the 4000 level.
Classical Studies: Students will take at least 42 credits, including
at least 12 credits at the 4000 level, selected from offerings in
the Classical Studies program.
Greek: Students will take at least 42 credits selected from offerings
in the Classical Studies program, of which at least 30 credits must
be in Greek and including at least 12 credits at the 4000 level.
Latin: Students will take at least 42 credits selected from offerings
in the Classical Studies program, of which at least 30 credits must
be in Latin, and including at least 12 credits at the 4000 level.
Honours Double Major BA Programs
Any one of the Honours BA programs described above may be pursued
jointly with any other Honours Bachelor's degree program in the
Faculties of Arts, Environmental Studies, Fine Arts, or with a major
in Earth and Atmospheric Science or Physics and Astronomy in the
Faculty of Pure and Applied Science.
Honours Double Major Interdisciplinary BA
Programs
Any one of Classics, Classical Studies, Greek or Latin may be
linked with any Honours Double Major Interdisciplinary BA program
in the Faculty of Arts. Students must take at least 36 credits in
Classics, Classical Studies, Greek or Latin and at least 36 credits
in the Interdisciplinary program. Courses taken to meet Classics,
Classical Studies, Greek or Latin requirements cannot also be used
to meet the requirements of the Interdisciplinary program. Students
in these Interdisciplinary programs must take a total of at least
18 credits at the 4000 level, including at least 12 credits in Classics,
Classical Studies, Greek or Latin and 6 credits in the Interdisciplinary

Honours Major/Minor BA Programs
Any one of the Honours BA programs described above may be pursued
jointly with any Honours Minor Bachelor's degree program in the
Faculties of Arts, Environmental Studies, Fine Arts, or with a minor
in Biology, Chemistry or Physics and Astronomy in the Faculty of
Pure and Applied Science.
Honours Minor BA Programs
The Honours Minor must be pursued jointly with an Honours BA program
in the Faculty of Arts.
The Honours Minor programs in the Classical Studies program are
as follows:
Classics: Students will take at least 30 credits in a combination
of Latin and Greek, of which 18 credits must be in Latin and 12
credits must be in Greek, or 12 credits in Latin and 18 credits
in Greek; and at least 6 credits at the 4000 level must be in Latin
or Greek.
Classical Studies: Students will take at least 30 credits, including
at least 6 credits at the 4000 level selected from offerings in
the Classical Studies program.
Greek: Students will take at least 30 credits selected from offerings
in the Classical Studies program, of which at least 24 credits must
be in Greek, and including at least 6 credits at the 4000 level.
Latin: Students will take at least 30 credits selected from offerings
in the Classical Studies program, of which at least 24 credits must
be in Latin, and including at least 6 credits at the 4000 level.
Note: Faculty of Arts legislation requires that, in order to obtain
an Honours BA (120 credits), students must take a total of at least
18 credits at the 4000 level, including at least 12 credits at the
4000 level in each Honours Major or Specialized Honours Major.
BA Programs
Classical Studies: Students will take at least 30 credits selected
from offerings in the Classical Studies program.
Greek: Students will take at least 30 credits selected from offerings
in the Classical Studies program, including at least 24 credits
in Greek.
Latin: Students will take at least 30 credits selected from offerings
in the Classical Studies program, including at least 24 credits
in Latin.
